YOUR MAUI MARRIAGE LICENSE
In order to have your Maui Wedding legalized, you need to obtain a marriage license in the State of Hawaii. There are several marriage licensing offices on the islands of Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. We typically schedule this appointment the day after your arrival. The fee for the license is $65 and has to be paid in cash to the licensing agent. They do not accept credit cards, business or personal checks. The marriage license appointment takes about 20 minutes. You will fill out your names, addresses, birthdays and birthplaces plus your parents full names, maiden names of Mothers and State or country they were born in. There are no waiting periods to apply for a license so that short notice Maui weddings are no problem at all. You no longer legally need witnesses in the State of Hawaii.
The legal requirements in order to get married in Hawaii are:
- The couple has to be 18 years of age. You do not have to produce a birth certificate but can bring a copy for your own comfort. You have to show valid identification, either a drivers license or a passport should you not be a Citizen of the United States. Please go to www.hawaii.gov/health then look for marriage license application. Please download the file, fill it out on line, print it out please and bring it with you for your marriage license appointment. Do NOT sign it, this has to be done in front of the marriage licensing agent.
- If this is not your fist marriage, you have to state the month, year, city and place of your last divorce or death of spouse. You only need to bring a certified copy of your last divorce or a death certificate if death occurred or divorce was finalized less than 60 days prior to getting remarried.
- The Law for Swiss Citizens has been simplified: They need to fill out a form on line which will we will e-mail you and you have to send it to the Swiss Embassy in San Francisco prior to your wedding here on Maui.
- European Citizens and couples from Australia and New Zealand can get married in Hawaii without a problem. All they need is a passport. It is helpful to bring your birth certificates but not required. We will apply for the necessary "Apostille" here on Maui, which is a signed letter from the Governor of Hawaii with a golden seal, stating that your Hawaii marriage was legally performed on Maui.
- At the marriage licensing agent you can fill out a green form in order to expedite the handling of your documents which should then arrive within 8 weeks. If you do not fill out this form, it will take about 4-6 months until you receive your registered license.
